Summary: I embarked upon the MSc in Management at the London Business School in order to take my career as a physician to a different level, where I could make a significant contribution not only to individual patients, but to a much wider community by working within a value-based, health-care related organisation. As a Sloan Fellow, I developed a unique insight into current concepts of management and leadership, and attained a broad strategic perspective at a global level. Palliative care physician, responsible for the clinical care of terminally ill patients in hospital and community settings; established consultative service with other medical specialties; extensive advocacy experience. As a physician, I succeeded in a field in which the understanding of human behaviour is paramount, and where facilitating understanding and negotiating solutions are essential for meaningful relationships with patients, relatives and the medical team. This required effective communication skills in medical situations that were usually complex, difficult and often painful. It was a privilege to offer empathy and understanding to patients in often extremely difficult circumstances. Clinical researcher, initiated and directed publicly funded research projects; wide teaching and lecturing experience; mentored and coached early career researchers; experienced in gathering and analysing information and strategy formulation. As a clinical researcher, I brought my existing skills in analysis and problem-solving as a doctor to bear on my research study. My project-management skills as well as my strategic way of thinking were vital for the successful completion and publication of the project. By mentoring young researchers, I could draw extensively on my skills in counselling and coaching. I am an avid reader, mostly of biographies, crime stories and personal development books. I am a reluctant observer of the English football league as our young son takes a great interest in it. In preparation for our move to Geneva, I am learning French from scratch - a greater challenge than I would have thought!
