Nick Antonopoulos

Locality: Guildford, United Kingdom
Summary: I have been carrying out research in computer science in the UK for over 13 years; 4 years during my PhD studies and more than 9 years working as a full time academic. The main focus of my research has been software mobile agents and Peer-to-Peer networks. My work involves the design and optimisation of P2P architectures in terms of data traffic and latency in the context of resource and service discovery. I have authored/co-authored about 60 edited proceedings, special issues and research articles in respectable peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. An interesting spin off my research has been the design of a novel agent recommender algorithm combining collaborative and content-based filtering. It was proven to outperform current state-of-the-art in terms of combined accuracy and coverage for recommending movies to users. I have successfully designed and taught dozens of undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Web computing, distributed systems, computer networks, P2P systems and software agents. For 8 years now I have been the Director of the Masters programmes in my Department. My most notable achievement was the design of an MSc programme in Internet Computing in 2001 which since that year has generated more than 1,200,000 gross income to the Department, From 1994-1995 I worked as a networks consultant for Fujitsu ICL in the UK and while at Surrey I was the co-founder and Director of the Mobile E-Commerce Technologies Limited which designed, developed and deployed Web-based information management systems in the UK. Also, between 2000-2002, I designed and delivered bespoke 1-day courses on advanced Web technologies to external companies including NDS; the company developing the software for the Sky set top boxes.

Interests: I am an avid fan of American pool (both classic and 9-ball) and enjoy participating in local amateur competitions. I try to keep up visiting the local gym 2-3 times a week where I enjoy weightlifting and rowing. I enjoy retro-computing. I have a VIC-20, a ZX Spectrum 48 and a ZX Spectrum +2B which I have great fun with writing games in assembly and basic. I spend plenty of free time on sudoku and IQ tests. Currently I am a member of two international high IQ societies.
