Dr Louise Hill Curth

Locality: Southampton, United Kingdom
Summary: I'm an early modern medical historian whose research focuses on health beliefs and practices for humans and animals in early modern England. Ideas about what constitutes a state of health or illness differ dramatically depending on the time and place in which they take place. In the early modern period (roughly 1500 1750) the major emphasis was on preventing illness and trying to maintain a state of health and wellbeing by following a good health regimen. Far from being a new idea, the modern emphasis on healthy lifestyles actually takes us back to a much earlier form of health behaviour. This is particularly clear when considering current advice about healthy diets and exercise and the important role that emotions can play on our health. Books: - The care of brute beasts: a social and cultural history of veterinary medicine in early modern England (Brill, 2009) - English Almanacs, Astrology & Popular Medicine, 1550 1700 (MUP, 2007). - From Physick to Pharmacology: Five Hundred Years of British Drug Retailing (Ashgate, 2006).
