Summary: Dr Brian Degger is an interdisciplinary biologist and creative based in Newcastle. His doctorate studies were around genetically engineering bacteria to produce growth factors for the aquaculture industry. During this time he was also involved in field studies of endangered fish. His skills extend to academic research on art and performance pieces (some of which he helped develop). In this he is interested in how artists could access cutting edge technologies, and how the audience perceives the work. business, thinker, innovator, friendly, sociable, agnostic in everything, approachable, willing to listen (sometimes), As a Digital City Fellow he set up Lab in a Box (currently at the pre-revinue stage), inventing and prototyping new products and services for science education, engagement and citizen science. Strongly collaborative and inquisitive, he has working with organisations such as Centre for Life (for Dissection@Life), Blast Theory(on I like Frank in Adelaide), AVFest(as artist laison), as well as attending workshops and master classes on everything from radio to DNA. Brian is a questioner, passionate about finding, researching and democratising knowledge, which is why Open Source Hardware and Software, DIYBio and collaboration interest him so much.
