Sharon Barrans

Locality: Huddersfield, United Kingdom
Summary: I am a clinical scientist working in the regional haematological malignancy diagnostic service (HMDS) at St James' institute of Oncology, Leeds, UK. I started my career as a biomedical scientist in histopathology in 1991, and specialised in haematological malignancy in 1993. Following my PhD in 2001 on the "IMMUNOPHENOTYPIC AND MOLECULAR APPROACHES TO THE CLASSIFICATION OF DIFFUSE LARGE B CELL LYMPHOMA", and successful completion of my ACS certificate of Attainment, I became state registered as a clinical scientist in the field of developing sciences in HMDS, which is the post I currently hold. My research interests are in the molecular pathogenesis of haematological malignancies, and my technical specialities have included immunohistochemistry and interphase FISH - particularly FISH on archival formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue, for which I developed a very robust method for routine detection of genetic abnormalities by FISH in paraffin sections as part of my PhD - this method is now in routine use in HMDS and provides excellent results in the vast majority of cases. I have recently progressed into the field of array technology, for which we have recently purchased the Illumina platform, and have begun work on SNP/CNV arrays in chronic and acute leukaemias, and gene expression (using DASL technology) on diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and Burkitt lymphoma. My current goals are to implement array technology into the diagnostic setting in the field of haematological malignancy, with a view to improving the accuracy of diagnosis and prognostic information.
Education:  University of Leeds  (1988-1991)

Industry: Hospital & Health Care
Skills: Haematological Malignancy diagnostics, in particular diffuse large B cell lymphoma prognostics, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH), Illumina SNP/CNV array and gene expression array, majority of work on FFPE tissues, clinical application of results to routine service.
Experience: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (Government Agency; Hospital & Health Care industry): Clinical Scientist,  (September 1991-Present) Clinical scientist in the regional haematological malignancy diagnostic service (HMDS)

Interests: reference requests, getting back in touch
