Locality: United Kingdom
Summary: Employing ethnographic study, my PhD research seeks to analyse how technological interventions interact with the wider dynamic social processes. In particular, it examines how they shape, and are shaped by local culture, gender relations, caste and other forms of power in the selected villages. It is investigating how technological interventions can expand the capabilities of the poor; how social processes and culture shape the behaviours, expectations and needs that have an implication for how the people use the technologies to improve their lives; and how people, while drawing on technology and other resources (social, natural, economic) negotiate with the constraints (and opportunities) created by wider social processes. Prior to starting the PhD, I worked as a Research Associate at Loughborough University in the U.K. where I conducted research on stakeholder engagement and related social issues in sustainability assessment of urban development projects. I hold a MSc in Sustainability, Planning and Environmental Policy from Cardiff University in the U.K. and a Bachelor of Planning degree from School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India. I have also worked for two years in India that included contribution to the preparation of a regional plan and a study of ecological changes.
